Dreams within a Dream
-
The movie InceptThe movie Inception uses the concept of a dream machine as a major
plot element. The “Pasiv Dream Machine” in Inception enables
multiple people to enter into a designated person’s dream. It allows all parties
to share in the dream imagery, events and outcome. However, the dream belongs to
one person who may or may not be aware of being in a dream shared by others.
How futuristic is this machine? In reality, is there anything close to dream
sharing? seem to be enough scientific knowledge about the workings of the brain during dreaming to allow for any real exploration into the concept of a dream machine…. yet. However, we are learning more and more about the brain during sleep each day and a dream sharing machine may one day be a reality.
Some researchers at the California Institute of Technology (see "Dream Recording (and Feedback) Comes Closer to Reality")
are taking a step in the direction of dream recording and replaying a reality. They have been using electrodes to record the activity of neurons in an area of the brain that controls memory. When shown pictures of celebrities, such as Michael Jackson and Marilyn Monroe, the researchers could pinpoint the precise neuron activated. The researchers envision a future in which a database of an individual’s brain patterns could be created, hopefully allowing a machine to record the images being created by the dreamer. The researchers admit that such technology is probably decades away.
While there isn’t an abundance of studies on the subject, some research has been conducted on communicating certain elements to dreamers telepathically. Stanley Krippner, PhD was the most successful at attaining statistically significant data in a research study where dreamers were able to correctly choose a painting that was telepathically communicated to them in a dream.
